VET for Secondary Schools (VSS)

What is VET for Secondary Schools?

VSS provides an opportunity for high school students to begin obtaining skills while still at school. Vocational Education and Training (VET) is specific industry-based training delivered from national training packages. It's a combination of practical and theory-based learning and is traditionally undertaken by apprentices and adult learners.

Charles Darwin University offers a number of VSS programs in Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs, Katherine and some rural locations to school students in years 9 – 12. Special entry requirements must be met for students under 15 years.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

All students studying nationally recognised training in Australia after January 1, 2015 will be required to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is an account (or reference number) made up of numbers and letters The USI will allow VET student’s online access to their training records and results through their online USI account. VET in School students wishing to study through CDU can obtain a USI number by visiting www.usi.gov.au. For more information view the USI documents in the VSS Parent Information menu below. For any questions regarding USI's please contact lyle.mellors@cdu.edu.au.

Choosing your VSS program

Students should consult with their school's VET Coordinator or Career Practitioner prior to choosing a VSS program.  Students should discuss VSS options with their parents or guardians before completing a NTG Expression of Interest to undertake VET (EOI) form (PDF 62KB). The student, parent / guardian and school must all sign the Expression of Interest to undertake VET form before sending it to CDU for consideration. Schools send completed EOI's to vetis@cdu.edu.au.

VSS information days

CDU VET in Schools information sessions are an opportunity for school staff, students and parents to learn more about the VSS programs on offer at CDU. Information sessions are run by lecturers who will be able to provide an insight into their industry.
